Sujecheon is a court music used for either accompanying court dance called jeongjae or for a royal procession. Sujecheon literally means “a life span as infinite as the heaven,” carrying a wish for longevity. The orchestra includes bak, hyangpiri, daegeum, haegeum, sogeum, ajaeng, janggu, and jwago. The strong and brilliant tone color of brass instruments, combined with slow tempo and irregular rhythm, results in a weighty and elegant atmosphere characteristic to court music.
